All races are run on sealed rural roads.
The Marathon and Half-Marathon will take place over official IAAF distances. Each course has been measured using a Jones Counter by an AAI approved course measurer. The Mini-marathon course has been measured at 6 miles.
The race will start and finish at the Waterfront in Clonakilty (old GAA grounds in the Town Centre). All races will start at 9 a.m. on December 10th 2011; Full and Mini-Marathons will start at a common starting line; runners in the Half-Marathon will have a separate starting line adjacent to the Waterfront. Click here for Course information and description.
Each participant will be chip timed using ‘Champion Chip’. To register a time it is important that all runners cross each timing mat on respective courses. The timing mats will be located at the Start and Finish lines, at the bottom of the hill on Inchydoney Island (full and half marathons)and at the half way point on the marathon course.
Every race finisher will receive a commemorative medal and specially designed technical running shirt.
Due to the unseasonably cold conditions we have been forced to abandon plans to post race packs to participants. Race packs will be available for collection a Race HQ, Clonakilty Waterfront from 10am to 10 pm on Friday December 10th and from 6am until 8am on race day.
Overseas participants can collect their race packs on the evening before (19:00 to 21:00) and on the morning of the event from 07:00 at race headquarters in the Waterfront. Please ensure to complete the reverse section of the bib number and provide contact details and any necessary medical information.
Late entries will be available from 19:00 to 21:00 on 09th December and from 07:00 to 07:30 on 10th December at race HQ in the Waterfront. You can Register by POST by downloading the registration form.
Parking will be available in some of Clonakilty’s car parks. All will be clearly sign posted and located within 500m of the Waterfront.
The safety of runners is our principal concern. Water stations will be provided every 3 miles; energy drinks will be available on the marathon course at Red Strand (approximately 16.5 miles) and at the Dunmore hotel (approximately 22 miles) to fuel the final push for home. Recovery drinks, bananas and water will be provided at the finish.
Traffic on the course will be curtailed for the duration of each of the races. Members of an Garda Siochana will be on duty along the race routes to manage traffic flow. Some roads may not be completely closed to traffic, so runners are advised to follow the instructions of marshals along the route.
Medical support will be provided by the Red Cross. Ambulances will be visible at key strategic points along each course. A minor injuries treatment area will be provided at the race finish. Massage will be available for all those with tired and sore limbs.
We advise all runners to dress appropriately for the weather conditions. West Cork tends to be cool in December with average daytime temperatures soaring as high as 8-10oC. For up to date weather information please visit www.met.ie
Due to the time of year, daylight is in short supply. The marathon course time limit is 6 hours. After 6 hours, the roads will return to normal traffic use. Runners and walkers would be asked to be aware of road safety and to wear or bring a visibility jacket. Where there are pedestrian walkways, participants will be asked to use them. If conditions become unsafe at any point during the race, participants may be advised to leave the course. Please be aware of your safety at all times.
Please respect the local environment and take any items you carry onto the course with you when you leave. Rubbish collection points will be located at each of the water stations. The success and enjoyment of this event will be greatly enhanced if we minimize the impact of our presence on the local environment. |
